Invisalign FAQ

Dr. Heidi Starnes and the staff at Starnes Orthodontics strive to offer the most comprehensive orthodontic treatment in and around the Newport Beach, Newport Coast, and Costa Mesa areas. One of our many treatment methods includes Invisalign, an alternative to braces. If you’re interested in and thinking about Invisalign or you would like to learn more, we’ve provided you a list of answers to frequently asked questions regarding Invisalign.

How Often Do I Have to Wear My Invisalign® Aligners?

You need to wear your aligners for up to 22 hours a day. You’re allowed to remove them when you’re eating, drinking, or performing your oral hygiene routine.

How Long Does the Invisalign® Treatment Take?

The treatment time varies from patient to patient, depending on the severity of each orthodontic case. Invisalign generally offers a faster treatment process than traditional braces though, usually ranging between 6 and 18 months.

Is There Any Discomfort with Invisalign® Treatment?

There will be some slight pressure and discomfort for the first day or two after each initial insertion of the clear aligners. This is normal though and just a sign that your teeth are moving into their intended position.

Are There Any Restrictions to What I Can Eat During Invisalign® Treatment?

No. When you wear traditional braces, there will be foods you’ll have to avoid. With Invisalign, you won’t ever have to worry about that. You will remove your aligners right before eating so you can maintain your current diet and eating habits. After you’re done eating, it’s important to brush your teeth and your Invisalign aligners before putting them back in.

Can I Chew Gum with My Invisalign® Aligners In?

We recommend taking the aligners out before you chew gum as the gum can stick to the aligners.

Can I Still Smoke While Using Invisalign®?

We strongly discourage smoking with Invisalign as the smoke can discolor the aligners.

How Do I Keep My Aligners Clean?

You can keep your Invisalign aligners clean by brushing them with toothpaste.

Will Wearing Invisalign® Affect My Speech?

There will be a short adjustment period at the start of Invisalign treatment just as there is for any orthodontic treatment. However, the more you speak with your aligners in, the quicker you’ll adjust.

How Often Should I See an Orthodontist During Invisalign® Treatment?

Regular office visits at our Newport Beach office will be scheduled approximately every five to six weeks. These appointments will guarantee that your Invisalign treatment is progressing as planned.

Do I Need Retainers After My Invisalign® Treatment Is Completed?

All orthodontic patients are instructed to wear retainers at night for an indefinite period of time. Sleeping with your retainers in at night will ensure that your teeth maintain their position and don’t shift back into misalignment.

Does Invisalign® Work for Kids?

Invisalign will work for kids as long as their teeth – including their second molars – have completely grown in.
